About me

Hi, welcome!

My name is Fulufhelo, it means hope.

I started this blog to document the things I love and am passionate about the most.  That is, and I hope I don’t come off as shallow for the first one, my hair! My natural hair and travel.

I haven’t always been natural. My journey started from a mishap a few years ago when I burned my scalp to zits with a relaxer.

I had to cut off all my hair as a result, and given that I was in my final year of high school and had to go to matric dance at the end of the year, I wasn’t particularly having the time of my life.

But little did I know that in a few months this would turn out to be the best thing that ever happened to me — as far as hair is concerned.

I discovered a community of girls like me who were upon the same journey of embracing their natural hair. Some (mostly on YouTube and Instagram) were killing it and growing hair that was admired by all who saw… and well for some (the rest of us) it was mostly an endless pool of frustrations and failed wash n gos.

Upon experiencing most of that frustration, I decided to document my experience and share my lessons. Because though I might fail a couple of times, I do get those moments of glory, and when I do, it’s worth sharing.

It is worth sharing because I become aware of what not to do and that may help someone who is in the same boat avoid making those mistakes.
And we know that frustration over the complexities of dealing with an afro sends a lot of people right back to using relaxers. The more we help each other minimize the frequency of the frustrating failures, the stronger we become as a community.

The second thing is travel. The bucket list section of this blog is made to document anything I aspire to do. These will be updated once they have been fulfilled.

I’d like to invite you to share your aspirations as well. What places do you want to visit?  Where have you been? What did you do and how did it feel? Believe me, I'm always in the mood for a good travel story.

By the way...

If you thought the name Perfect-ish was inspired by the ABC show Black-ish, you are completely right. I started this blog around the same time when Black-ish was gaining traction. And to be honest, the reason I started to watch it was because of the name. So when it came to naming my blog, nothing felt as fitting as Perfect-ish. Mostly because it accurately depicts my appreciation of life as it is.

Thank you so much for checking me out. If you’d like to work with me, find out how here. If you'd like to connect, click here. I’d love to hear from you.

Oh, and by all means, stalk me here:

How to create a hair care routine for short natural hair

“If my hair is short, I do not need to take care of it.”  WRONG! You always need to take care of your hair, even at its infancy. Think of taking care of your hair as a lifestyle rather than a stage you need to go through in order to grow your hair.
